Look closely. The beetles on this branch eat only invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. Scientists hope the beetle will spread through forests where the pest has decimated Eastern hemlocks.
The invasive plant is pitting conservationists who want it removed to protect native species against land managers who say it's keeping coastal land intact.
The pest, which has already damaged grape crops in eastern counties, is moving westward. Businesses will need permits to move goods in and out of quarantined counties.
